know your GATE !!

One of the exams for admission into engineering and science master programs in India is the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering, (GATE). It tests your understanding of all the undergraduate subjects. It is jointly conducted by the Indian Institute of Science and Indian Institute of Technologies at Roorkee, Delhi, Guwahati, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Chennai (Madras), and Mumbai (Bombay). Recently, GATE scores are being used by Public Sector Undertaking for hiring engineering candidates into their entry-level positions. This is one of the reasons for rise in number of students attempting GATE which is almost 8-9 lakh students every year.

A student can choose from a wide range of disciplines for which they want to attempt GATE.

What to expect for the Exam
The entire syllabus for the exam involves all the undergraduate subjects that are to be answered in different sections of the exam.

The entire duration of the exam is 3 hours with a total of 65 questions to be answered for a total mark of 100. It’s an online computer-based test where the students are expected to answer from Multiple choice questions (MCQ) or Multiple select questions (MSQ) along with some Numerical answer type questions.

Students should focus on the following areas of study;

  • Verbal Proficiency: Grammar, sentence completion, analogies, word groups, instructions, critical reasoning, and verbal deduction.
  • Numerical abilities: Numerical reasoning & computation, and data interpretation.
  • Engineering Mathematics (not for all Papers).
  • Technical Ability: Technical questions related to the Paper chosen.

Marking scheme
All the 65 questions are divided into 1 mark questions and 2 mark questions. 10 questions are for General Aptitude, and 55 questions are for Technical questions. General Aptitude will amount to 15% of the total score of the exam as students have to answer about 5 one mark questions and 5 two mark questions. The remaining 85% of the marks are from Technical sections as 25 questions are one mark questions, and 30 questions are two marks questions.

A 1/3 of the marks are deducted for a wrong answer in MCQ whereas, there is no negative marking for MSQ and numerical answer type questions.

Qualifying marks differ from year to year, and it varies for different subjects and categories.

For the General (GEN) category, qualifying marks are 25, or 25+ whichever is higher.
For Other backward class (OBC), the qualifying marks is 90% of the GN qualifying marks And for ST/SC a 2/3 of the GN qualifying marks.
